The NYBG Holiday Train Show: Cuckoo for Choo Choo
The New York Botanical Garden is a New York City treasure. The grounds are vast and are an endless green space perfect for romping, running and giggling with your little ones. Magical year round, one of my favorite times to visit the gardens is during the winter and specifically for the Holiday Train Show.
Now in it’s 27th year, the Holiday Train Show exhibit is erected inside the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. The installation is massive and features 175 intricate replicas of NYC landmarks made entirely of plants, leaves, twigs and seeds.
New for 2018, One World Trade Center was my personal favorite.
In addition to the absolutely breathtaking art, model trains zoom by delighting toddlers and grown ups alike on half a mile of track. Our toddler CC absolutely goes nuts for the trains. He loves them, he stares at them, he runs from piece to piece yelling “come back choo choo!” During the Holiday Train show the rest of the gardens are dressed up for the holidays and this year, there was even a wooden choo choo in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden to climb on!
The train show is now an annual tradition for our family and it gets better every year!
Plan your Trip
Tickets need to be purchased beforehand and entrance to the exhibit is timed. Check out the NYBG website to buy tickets, learn more about parking and public transportation options and check out exactly what’s beautiful now (or when you plan to visit).
To make the most of your visit:
Book your tickets in advance this is wildly popular and does sell out.
Try to visit in early December and generally stay away from the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays as it will be less crowded. Morning slots are less crowded than the afternoon.
Give yourself an hour to get through the installation
Stop at the cafe for a beverage or lunch after you enter the exhibit. The cafe has hot sandwiches, pizzas, custom salads, coffee, lattes, hot chocolate, beer and wine year round with seasonal sides and salads. I’ve never had something I didn't like here!
Make sure you make time to see the rest of the gardens, especially the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden! Open year round there is live entertainment like puppet shows and also indoor activities like craft making or even seed planting
